TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Tampa is set to celebrate a milestone event with the inauguration of its 11th president, President Teresa Abi-Nader Dahlberg, on Monday, March 31. The two-day event will mark a historic transition for the university and feature an investiture ceremony, an academic symposium, and a series of celebratory activities.
“The president of a university is a very important position which sets the course for a university’s direction and strategic initiatives,” said Keith Todd, vice president of Development and University Relations. “An inauguration is both a traditional ceremony and a celebration of the institution’s past, present and future.”
A Historic Ceremony Decades in the Making
The last time UTampa hosted a presidential inauguration was nearly 35 years ago, making this event especially significant. The investiture ceremony, set to take place at 9:30 a.m. in Falk Theatre, serves as the centerpiece of the celebration. During this formal tradition, President Dahlberg will receive the University Medallion, symbolizing her official role as UTampa’s leader.
In addition to the main ceremony, the inauguration will include:
- An academic symposium featuring distinguished university presidents
- A ceremonial tree planting to commemorate the occasion
- A scholarship luncheon honoring UTampa students
- Additional events celebrating the university community
Many attendees will be dressed in academic regalia, a tradition among university faculty and leadership. The program will also feature musical performances, remarks from university officials, and President Dahlberg’s inauguration address, where she is expected to outline her vision for the institution.
Why Now? Understanding the Timing of the Inauguration
President Dahlberg assumed her role nine months ago, leading some to wonder why the inauguration is taking place almost a year after she started. However, Todd explained that this delay is common in university inaugurations.
“It has become standard practice for university presidents to have time between starting the presidency and being inaugurated,” said Todd. “This period gives the new president time to get to know the university community, which in turn gives them the ability to announce a more thoughtful direction for the institution at the inauguration.”
A Celebration for the Entire UTampa Community
Planning for this large-scale event has been underway for six months, ensuring that faculty, staff, students, and distinguished guests can all participate.
“The hardest part is scheduling a time when faculty, staff, students, trustees, friends, and family of the president and others can come together for the ceremony,” Todd said. “Otherwise, there have been no discernible challenges.”
The university is well-prepared for the occasion, having extensive experience organizing large-scale ceremonies, including commencement events. Security measures and logistical planning have been carefully coordinated to ensure a smooth experience for all attendees.
Students interested in attending the ceremony are encouraged to request a ticket by filling out this form through SpartanNet.
Distinguished Guests and Notable Attendees
The inauguration is expected to draw high-profile figures from both the academic world and government. Presidents from Wake Forest University, Texas Christian University, and Georgia State University will attend and participate in the academic symposium following the ceremony.
Additionally, elected officials from the city, state, and federal levels will be present to mark the occasion. While specific names have not been released, their attendance underscores the significance of the event.
Looking Ahead: What This Means for UTampa’s Future
Beyond its ceremonial importance, the inauguration represents a turning point for UTampa, with President Dahlberg expected to outline her vision for the future. According to Todd, Dahlberg has spent her first nine months actively listening to the UTampa community, including students, faculty, and staff.
“The inauguration is a celebration of UTampa’s new leader and an opportunity to learn about President Dahlberg’s vision for the future and new initiatives,” said Todd. “The ceremony symbolizes the university moving forward with a new chapter to achieve future success.”
One of the key priorities of President Dahlberg’s administration is maintaining UTampa’s mission of providing “challenging and high-quality educational experiences to a diverse group of learners.” While specific policy changes have not yet been announced, any future decisions will be aimed at improving student life, academic programs, and university operations.
A President Who Engages with Students
Since assuming her role, President Dahlberg has actively engaged with students, alumni, and the broader university community. From climbing a minaret during Alumni Weekend to hosting a “Drop-In with Dahlberg” program, she has demonstrated a hands-on approach to leadership.
“Since last June, President Dahlberg has climbed a minaret with alumni during Alumni Weekend, worked out with ROTC cadets, visited with alumni across the country, undertaken a student golf cart ‘cash cab’ challenge on TikTok, instituted the ‘Drop-In with Dahlberg’ program, cheered at Spartan athletic games, attended recitals and performances, sat for interviews with the local media, and met with student leaders, alumni, donors, trustees, and local business people,” Todd said.
This level of personal engagement signals that students will play an active role in shaping the university’s future. With an open-door policy and frequent student interactions, Dahlberg appears committed to fostering an inclusive and dynamic campus environment.
A Milestone Event for UTampa
As UTampa prepares for this historic moment, excitement is building among students, faculty, and staff. More than just a ceremony, the presidential inauguration marks the beginning of a new era for the university.
