Shawn Mendes is no stranger to the tangling web of the celebrity dating lifestyle. He has dated runway model Hailey Bieber, singer Camila Cabello, and pop singer Sabrina Carpenter. We have all cleared our minds from his breakup with Bieber, but Cabello and Carpenter are still making the headlines for some unknown reason.
What is the fascination with these two singers? Are we truly interested in why these relationships failed and want to seek answers in the media? Or are we simply waiting for a celebrity catfight to see who Mendes loves more?
Cabello vs. Carpenter
Many people, especially students at the University of Tampa, have debated who Shawn Mendes was more obsessed with. Are you team Cabello or team Carpenter?
“Considering the fact that I didn’t even know Sabrina and Shawn dated, I think he’s more obsessed with Camila,” said sophomore Alyssa Renew.
“Shawn Mendes is clearly more obsessed with Camila Cabello,” said another Cabello fan, Luca Rius.
It is not an unpopular opinion that Shawn was more obsessed with Cabello, but is Sabrina Carpenter more obsessed with Camila Cabello than we are?
Is the song “Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter about her, Shawn, and Camila?
It was not just the song that had fans thinking the video was hinting at Mendes and Cabello, but it was also the music video that got the train moving. The music video for Carpenter’s “Taste” was released on Aug. 23, 2024. The music video stars Carpenter and movie star Jenna Ortega. It shows violent footage of the girls fighting to the death over the man that they are both in love with.
“Taste is 100% about her, Shawn, and Camila,” said Renew. “The actors and the costumes in the music video resemble Shawn and Camila.”
“Why would she use Jenna Ortega in the video?” asked junior Molly Jager.
With that comment, does that mean the man in the video is Shawn Mendes? Is Jenna Ortega supposed to be Camila Cabello because they have the same color hair? Or are we all just watching the video and making assumptions that cause gossip to spread?
Do celebrities still gossip like they are in high school?
Seeing a situation play out on live TV, magazines, and songs have us wondering if celebrities are still seeking out the adrenaline rush of high school drama.
“Celebrities still gossip like they’re in high school because it gets them publicity,” said Renew.
Is this true? Do celebrities seek out name recognition by spreading rumors about themselves and others so their name is spoken and read on numerous platforms, or is it something deeper than that?
Renew said, “Many celebrities are child stars who never got the chance to go to high school and get that drama out of their systems.”
This is a very valid and accurate depiction of celebrity lifestyles.
“Their fame has prevented them from growing up,” said Rius.
While this all makes sense, are these valid excuses for celebrities to gossip and cause drama within their circle, or are we making excuses because we secretly love the drama too?
