The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards took place Monday, Jan. 15, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. The award show recognized the best in television. Anthony Anderson, star of the TV show Black-ish, hosted the award ceremony for the first time. 

The ceremony aired live on Fox after the red carpet. The award show honored TV shows and specials that aired from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. 

The award show was scheduled to take place in Sept. 2023 but was postponed due to the writer’s and actors’ strikes from May to July 2023. 

Succession’s fourth and final season had 27 nominations and took home six Emmys. The show took the award for Outstanding Drama Series for the third time. Actors who took home awards for the show include Kieran Kulkin for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Matthew Macfayden for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and Sarah Snook for Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Director Mark Mylod took the award for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series. 

The FX series The Bear took home six Emmys, including Best Comedy Series. Ayo Adibiri won the award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Ebon Moss-Bachrach won for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Jeremy Allen White took home his first Emmy for Leading Actor in a Comedy Series. 

“The Bear deserved all the nominations and awards. Jeremy Allen White was very deserving of the lead actor award,” said Katherine Barone, a Junior at UT. “The show is amazing, and it has very high stakes, energizing moments, and it’s just a well-written show overall.”

The Netflix series Beef won five Emmys, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. The director and writer of the show, Lee Sung Jin, took both Outstanding Director and Outstanding Writer for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Steven Yeun won the award for Lead Actor for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Ali Wong was the winner for Lead Actress for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. 

Elton John became an EGOT winner with the Emmy win for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium.

Charlie Puth and The War and Treaty performed “See You Again” and “I’ll Be There for You” during the In-Memoriam, which included a nod to the beloved Friends actor Matthew Perry

Other notable Emmy winners include Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, and Rupaul’s Drag Race.  

The Final season of Ted Lasso received 21 nominations.

“I watched Ted Lasso before the Emmys, and I was very happy to see some nominations,” said Sophomore Sarah Kopecky. “I’m happy for everyone that got nominated this year.” 

The first season of Netflix’s Wednesday got director Tim Burton his first Emmy nomination. 

“I think Tim Burton deserved the Outstanding Directing Award because he did an amazing job of recreating Wednesday in the 21st century,” said freshman Gloria Falach.
