The fall season is officially here, which means it’s time for all things pumpkin spice, those scented candles that everyone goes crazy for and the cute fall like decorations around the house. Oh, and of course we can’t forget the fashionable big scarves, oversized sweaters and UGG boots, right? Or in Florida maybe a light jacket will do.
Yes, the fall season may be all of those things but let’s not forget the most important thing about the fall season, and that is spooky season. That’s right, we can’t forget the scariest time of the year, and that’s Halloween. It’s time for haunted houses, haunted corn mazes and all things scary.
Let’s not forget that it’s also that time of year where you cuddle up or hide under the covers and watch all the scary movies. It seems as though everyone, including Netflix, wants to join in on the scare as well. In honor of the spooky season, Netflix has just released a new line up for their unique selection called Netflix and Chills. For you horror fanatics out there Netflix has thought of you and heard your pleas, and now they have been answered.
On Friday, Sept. 13, Nextflix made the announcement about their new section in which it will be all things “creepy and crawly” and will continue through Friday, Oct. 25. In this section on Netflix, there will be showings of all your favorite haunted and scary movies from new Netflix originals to the classics like The Shining. They are even offering some not so spooky films for the kids, so don’t worry about the little ones, they won’t be left out either.
To all my fellow Halloween and horror movie lovers, you wouldn’t want to miss out on this because you don’t have long until all things scary go away.
Netflix has released their lineup for the new selection with new movies such as In the Tall Grass, which is about a brother and sister enter a field of tall grass to rescue a boy, and they can’t escape the evil that creeps in the grass. As well as Fracture, where a man’s wife and daughter suddenly disappear in a hospital, and the man is convinced that this hospital is covering up something beyond its creepy corridors.
Of course the all American favorites such as American Horror Story and Scream 2 will be included. Alongside these movies are many more that will release throughout October, so get your popcorn ready. With scary movies now being the new craze, Netflix decided to switch things up for its viewers, especially for the horror movie lovers out there.
Since the announcement of the new selection on Netflix, there have been mixed feelings on the new section. Many didn’t know anything about the announcement, and others question “is this worth it”.
“I think that this is a good idea, especially because we are approaching the Halloween season,” said Megan Moore, sophomore allied health-physical therapy major. “But I think peoples’ biggest issue with them is that they always remove these titles because they don’t want to pay for leasing anymore. So, for a horror movie lover like myself, it is kind of annoying.”
While others are on the other side of the spectrum who have other opinions and are looking forward to the new and old selection of scary movies.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea. Netflix and chills are good play on words, and it gets me excited for spooky season,” said Arianna Pepin, junior marine biology major. “I’m hoping to see a wide variety of scary movies. It’s nice to watch classics and reminisce, but I also like watching new films. I’m always hoping that the next scary movie I watch can actually get a reaction out of me. I love the thrill.”
With the fall season here and Halloween quickly approaching, Netflix could bring in more viewers with its new selection of scary movies. Netflix and Chills could also boost their ratings against competitors like Hulu and Amazon Prime.
“I think it will bring a lot more viewers to Netflix,” said Kiara Flowers junior theatre major. “I love Netflix and scary movies, so it is cool that they made a specific section on Netflix dedicated to that. It will really get more people into watching movies in that section.”
’Tis the season to be spooky. If haunted houses and Halloween parties aren’t your forte then grab your popcorn, blankets, friends, or whomever and cuddle up and watch some Netflix and Chills.
