The University of Tampa’s men and women’s swim team has moved up to sixth in the nation for the women’s team and 12th for the men’s team for the Division II January College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll.

Last week, freshman Holly Wessel and Joseph Bozzi were titled Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Swimmer of the Week. The meet to determine their success was held last week at Florida State University.

Wessel is a freshman here at UT and is from Naperville, Illinois. She started swimming when she was 4 years of age and has continued throughout her childhood and teenage years and into her first year here at UT.

“I make sure that I get enough sleep the night before and just relax. At the meet, I have fun with my teammates and not stress about my events,” said Wessel. “However, this does give me more confidence going into the end of season just because I know I am doing the best that I can be right now.”

Wessel specializes in freestyle and finished fourth place in the 1000 free timing 10:18.45 in a meet against Florida State last week.

“My favorite stroke is freestyle because I am able to swim it for longer periods of time and just zone out and forget everything going on around me and just focus on my stroke,” said Wessel.

Her time of 10:18.45 for the 1000 free is the 14th best in Division II this season.

Joseph Bozzi, freshman from New Lennox, Illinois, won swimmer of the week for the SSC two weeks ago and has done it again.

Bozzi’s second run of swimmer of the week was a result of his success at a meet against Florida State as well. He finished third in the 1000 free with a time of 9:34.18. He also placed fifth in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.56.

Bozzi has been swimming for 10 years now.

“Before my meets, I always eat a good breakfast and listen to music. I just sit by myself and get into my zone,” said Bozzi. “It is a great accomplishment winning swimmer of the week because there are so many outstanding swimmers in our conference. I am truly humbled,” said Bozzi.
