Softball Secures Postseason Play

While the rest of the student body has finals on its mind, the UT women’s softball team is focused on one thing: regionals.

The team ensured a spot in regional play after ending their season with the defeat of the nation’s top ranked team, Barry University.

The Spartans traveled to Miami to face off against the Buccaneers for three games.

After falling to the Bucs 3-2 in extra innings, the Spartans came back Saturday to sweep the last two games with a score of 2-1 both times.

“We needed to win one of the games to make it to postseason,” head coach Leslie Kanter said. “When Friday went into extra innings I thought we had it, but after we won the first game on Saturday, I knew we would win the second one because with that pressure off our backs it is easier to win.”

The Spartans definitely showed they could compete against top teams when they stepped on to the field Saturday.

In the first game, Auburn University transfer Ashley Arcuri drove in both runs in the second inning and Heather VanLandingham piched the complete game, giving up only one run and striking out six.

“We swept Barry last year, so I was pretty confident we could do it again,” VanLandingham said. “Everyone was nervous because they are the number one hitting team, but I was not scared.”
