Last week demonstrated why the women’s basketball team is poised to defend the Sunshine State Conference title. Not only did Tampa overcome past SSC contender Rollins College, but also played a solid road game against Lynn University that simply had an adverse ending in the last few seconds. The Spartans (7-2 SSC) dropped Rollins to 2-7 in conference play while edging ahead of Lynn (6-3 SSC) after their recent loss to Eckerd College.

The driving force of the team still rests on Sheena Walton. Walton recorded 50 consecutive games with a block on last Saturday against Rollins. Starting all 19 games played this season, Walton remained the only player to hold a points per game average in the double digits (14.5) followed closely by Alexa Kane who has 9.7 ppg.

But that is just the inside game. The underclassmen control the outside. Freshman Quynh Nguyen has hit 100 percent of three point attempts in all four games she’s played this season. Of course, this means both times the ball left her hand it found the net for she is 2-2.

Sophomore Angela Guiu has shot behind the arch 69 times. Shooting over 50 percent, she’s accounted for 105 points this season from threes alone. Despite these younger members adding effort, only two home games remain in the rest of the season.

If these games are to be won it will take leadership and experience. But this is exactly what this Tampa team has. If the Spartans are to go back to back in SSC and possibly even further, this is the year.
